Extreme Kayak Fishing Sailfish Smackdown Tournament Recap

If you haven’t heard of the folks at Extreme Kayak Fishing Inc. yet, here is your chance to get caught up.  The self-proclaimed “other guys” of kayak angling, Joe Hector and crew have taken your grandpa’s kayak fishing tournament to another level.  Extreme Kayak Fishing is the host of multiple offshore kayak fishing tournaments that target the big fish!

Based out of Pompano Beach FL, the Extreme Kayak / Paddle Board Fishing Tournament started two years ago and is rapidly expanding in 2014 with a new tournament location in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

Recently, they hosted their annual Extreme Kayak Fishing Sailfish Smackdown Tournament.  With a limited number of qualifying entrants, everyone made the trip down to the Brus Room in Pompano Beach, FL where the party began!

Wings, beer, and expensive raffle prizes!  With a reputation for going far beyond the norm, what makes you think these guys wouldn’t have an “extreme” party with “extreme” raffle prizes?  The raffle included a new Hobie Revolution 13, Engel Coolers, and Railblaza mounting accessories.

After a 7am shotgun start, the kayak anglers with nerves of steel headed out to find their sailfish! Navigating and fishing the clear blue waters may be intuitive for the locals, however, Chris Thomas from Tulsa, Oklahoma had the first fish on at 9:15 AM.  Reeled in from roughly 200 feet of water of South Florida water, this fish would end up being the tournament winner!  Not bad for a guy from a landlocked state, huh?

As the big winner, Chris was awarded some prizes that would make other tournament winners blush.  Included in his take was an extreme EKTF glass trophy, $3,000 cash, Costa Del Mar Sunglasses, and a custom rod from Blue Marlin Chronicles.  The second place was Ryan Jones (also from Oklahoma) and the third place winner was Marcos Baldo (FL).
